Almost Ninety

My grandmother will be ninety this year.  She’s one tough lady.  Despite bad knees that cause her pain, she’s still kicking, so to speak, attending exercise class, playing cards with friends, and even traveling.  Just a few months ago, she went to England to visit my aunt and uncle.

This August, a mere two days before our big move date, my aunt hosted a family gathering for my grandmother.  A pseudo-celebration for her 90th birthday, which she will actually celebrate in January.

I’m sure my grandmother never imagined that her four children, would eventually turn into a family of this size: And that’s not even all of us, some grandchildren, and significant others (mine was one) were missing that day.

Kind of amazing if you ask me!

We lucked out with a beautiful day, a beautiful pool, great food, and of course, great company. I got to see family that I don’t get to see very often and even got to meet the latest addition to our big family tree.  Isn’t he a cutie!

Of course, the day wouldn’t be complete without a little excitement.  Amidst all the swimming, and diving, and general merriment, there was an emergency room visit that resulted in this: Six stitches.  All I can say is watch out for two year olds, with chins of steel.  They can be lethal when diving off of diving boards.  And can I just add, thank God it wasn’t caused by one of my kids!  But my cousin’s husband survived and even returned with a smile. (I wonder if they gave him any pain killers in the ER?)

Two family reunions in one month, I feel lucky, but I feel even luckier to have a grandma, who will be celebrating her ninetieth birthday, this year!
